CHAMPIONSHIP SCHEDULE
IN MEMORY OF LEANDROS MARTIDIS
The tournament is held in memory of beloved Leandros Martidis, father of the Cypriot Fide Master Alkis Martidis. Leandros Martidis was the founder and first Director of the Department of Information Technology Services and from 1991 to 1997 he was a member of the Public Service Commission.
In the mid-1970s, Leandros pioneered the creation of the Computerisation Branch of the General Accounting Office of the Republic of Cyprus. Being very progressive, insightful and far-sighted, he believed in the potential of computerisation from the very beginning and in 1980 he convinced the leadership of the Ministry of Finance of the necessity to make computerisation independent of the General Accounting Office in order to enable the extension of computerisation throughout the Public Service. Following legislation, the Department of Computer Services was established as an independent Department of the Ministry of Finance with Leandros Martidis as its first Director. Until his retirement in 1986, he never stopped working hard to strengthen the Department.
His love for chess was immense and he was a member of the Limassol Chess Club and PASYDY Chess Club. He was a close associate and friend of the former president of the PASYDY Chess Club, Mr Giazos.
Leandros Martidis died on 21 January at the age of 94.
